The essence of God’s character is love.
From this premise arises the sublime truth that God, while possessing all power, only desires love-motivated worship.
God’s law is a law of liberty, not of force.
Wherever the true gospel is known and received, there is liberty. The gospel, therefore, stands for the separation of church and state, and stands against all religious coercion.
The mark of the beast is the exact opposite of the gospel, which is to say, it is the exact opposite of love and liberty.
The Book of Revelation clearly describes how the mark of the beast will be enforced. By a union of church and state, liberty of conscience will be banished from the earth.
A false image of God will be forced upon the world by means of civil laws and penalties. A religious persecution machine, aided by state legislation, will be set in motion. Public forums, interviews, and trials will focus the world’s attention on a persecuted minority and will call attention to the gospel of liberty they hold. All the inhabitants of the earth will decide in favor of religious liberty or religious coercion.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
“Nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” John 11:50
“Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.” John 18: 14
“And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.” 1 John 4:16
“But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:25
“Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18
“These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.” John 16 :1-3
“So he shall return and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation. Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering. Now when they fall, they shall be aided with a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue. And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time.
Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done.” Daniel 11:30-36
“The prophecy of Revelation 13 declares that the power represented by the beast with lamb like horns shall cause the “earth and them which dwell therein” to worship the papacy –there symbolized by the beast “like unto a leopard.”
The beast with two horns is also to say “to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast; and, furthermore it is to command all both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond,” to receive the mark of the beast. Revelation 13:11-16
It has been shown that the United States is the power represented by the beast with lamb like horns, and that this prophecy (Revelation 13) will be fulfilled when the United States shall enforce Sunday observance, which Rome claims as the special acknowledgement of her supremacy.
But in this homage to the papacy, the United States will not be alone.

The influence of Rome in the countries that once acknowledged her dominion is still far from being destroyed.
Prophecy foretells a restoration of her power.
I saw one of the heads as it were wounded to death; And his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
The infliction of the deadly wound points to the downfall of the papacy in 1798. Paul states plainly that the man of sin will continue until the second end advent.
And the revelator declares also, referring to the papacy, all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life, Revelation 13:8.
In both the Old and the New World, the papacy will receive homage in the honor paid to the Sunday institution, that rests solely upon the authority of the Roman church.
The assertion that God’s judgments are visited upon men for their violation of the Sunday- Sabbath will be repeated; already it is beginning to be urged. And a movement to enforce Sabbath observance is fast gaining ground.” GC 579
