As his crowning act of deception, Satan will appear on earth claiming to be Christ.
He will manifest himself in supernatural form, unlike any spectacle humans have ever witnessed.
He will perform “miracles” and speak eloquently of peace, making the delusion almost overmastering.
Then, as the world is hammered with calamities, the false Christ will declare his approval of religious legislation-the enforcement of the mark of the beast– as the right course for securing God’s favor and averting further destruction.
He will claim that those who are standing in defiant resistance against legislated worship are the cause of God’s displeasure and that they must comply or be punished.
“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand.
“Therefore, if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered. Matthew 24:23-28
“Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.
He causes all, both small and great, rich, and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. Revelation 13:11-18
“The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.” Revelation 17: 12-14
“As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will personate Christ.
The church has long professed to look to the Savior’s advent as the consummation of her hopes. Now the great deceiver will make it appear that Christ has come.
In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son of God-given by John in the Revelation.
“And amid the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters;” Revelation 1:13-15.
The glory that surrounds him is unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have yet beheld. The shout of triumph rings upon the air: “Christ has come Christ has come!” The people prostate themselves in adoration before him while he lifts his hands and pronounces a blessing upon them as Christ blessed his disciples when he was upon the earth.
His voice is soft and subdued, yet full of melody. And gentle compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious heavenly truths which the Savior uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ, he claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has blessed.
He declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name by refusing to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth.
This is the strong, almost overmastering delusion. Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes, from the least to the greatest, give heed to these sorceries, saying: “This is the great power of God”. “To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.” Acts 8: 10.
But the people of God will not be misled. GC 624
